Wired Members of USMA '82: It's been a full quarter since I last wrote to you. I am two terms closer to my doctorate, and looking forward to joining you at West Point in 2002. My regret is that I will not have a house for us to meet in by the time of our Reunion. It's better for me that we'll all be in a hotel together for the October weekend (Steve Kalish, Reunion Chair is handling that). But it's more expensive for all of us who were going to crash at Fort Knotts for the weekend. In the last barrage of letters you mentioned that you'd heard enough for now of the fund-raising campaign. So I'll just say we're making progress, so keep up the support. As for the quality of cadets, they're just like we were. Last week I was directly involved with a yearling in an honor investigation: his response to the accusation was that however it turned out, he would use the experience as a learning event. He certainly did so. And he was not found on honor, which is, in this case, good for the Corps. I see the same mix of personalities in the classroom that we had back in 1978--star men to goats. Some care, some don't. We enhance the attitudes of the caring ones, and work with vigor on the recalcitrants. You can read in any AOG publication how much building is going on. Shea Stadium looks great. Arvin Gym is still partly rubbled. The Supe who oversaw all the reconstruction, LTG Dan Christman, leaves 8 June. The inbound SECARMY will likely announce his successor soon. In an effort to promote the USMA to the most people among the Great American Public, the AOG included "Friends of West Point" in the alumni Constitution. This category of AOG membership is for those who love USMA, but are not former cadets. Nominate those who you think conduct themelves in a way that brings honor on the Academy. We appreciate the positive attention and publicity. I am attending a couple of West Point Leader Conferences in June and August. One is in DC, the other at USMA. If there's a topic you want me to cover with the Academy leaders, or with AOG leaders, pass your comments along. You may reach me at SAY8NT@AOL.COM. You can call, too. 814-861-7797. Sincerely, Les Knotts Prez, USMA '82 |
